Rexial Admitted into Bank of Uganda Sandbox

KAMPALA, UGANDA - July 13, 2023 - Rexial Payment Systems Limited has been accepted into the Bank of Uganda Sandbox, a regulatory initiative designed to promote innovation and financial inclusion in Uganda's payments industry. This milestone enables Rexial to test and refine its direct debit infrastructure—built to automate recurring payments from bank and mobile money accounts across Africa.

Building Infrastructure for Africa's Subscription Economy

Rexial's platform provides the foundational infrastructure that enables banks, mobile money operators, and merchants to process direct debits seamlessly. Unlike consumer-facing apps, Rexial operates as the underlying network—available to payment aggregators, gateways, and orchestrators to power their recurring payment offerings.

This infrastructure approach allows businesses across sectors—from utilities and insurance to lending and subscriptions—to automate collections while giving customers control over their recurring payments.

"We are thrilled to be part of the Bank of Uganda Sandbox," said Aéko Ongodia, CEO of Rexial. "This acceptance validates our approach to building critical payments infrastructure for Africa. The sandbox environment allows us to refine our platform under regulatory supervision, ensuring it meets the highest standards of security, compliance, and reliability before full-scale launch."

Addressing Uganda's Recurring Payments Challenge

With millions of Ugandans using mobile money and digital banking daily, reliable infrastructure for recurring payments has been a missing piece. Rexial's platform supports diverse use cases—subscription services, loan repayments, insurance premiums, and utility bills—creating more efficient, secure payment experiences for customers, businesses, and financial institutions alike.

What the Sandbox Enables

The Bank of Uganda Sandbox provides a controlled environment where fintech companies can test solutions under central bank supervision, validating technology and compliance measures before full market launch.

"Our goal is to build infrastructure that removes friction from recurring payments," added Ongodia. "The sandbox allows us to prove our platform works securely at scale before rolling it out across Uganda's financial ecosystem."
